On December 28th, the Council of Ministers approved the modification of Article 48 of the General Circulation Regulation that refers to speed limits on conventional roads.

The main objective of this modification is to reduce the accident rate and achieve a reduction of 37 the rate of deaths in traffic accidents per million inhabitants. In 2017 the rate was 39. Therefore, it has proceeded to reduce the speed on conventional roads and to homogenize the maximum speed on these roads, establishing it at 90 km/h.

Conventional roads have the highest accident rates. 7 out of 10 accidents with victims take place in them. One thousand people die annually.

The modification of this speed limit will affect about 10,000 km of roads.
